What Is Mercy?
Mercy is the “compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.” In other words, when we receive mercy, we are not given the punishment that we deserve. Instead we are granted clemency through compassion. God is rich in mercy to us. “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.… For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:8, 11).
What Does God's Mercy Look Like?
God’s mercy is one of unmatched sacrifice. At its core, mercy is forgiveness. God extended His mercy toward us when He forgave us of our sins through His Son. He shielded us from the punishment we deserved because of our sin. God’s mercy is an extension of His love—it is enduring, it is sure, and it is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). God’s mercy is abundant (1 Peter 1:3) and it triumphs over judgment (James 2:12-13).
Psalm 37:25-26
How Do We Show Mercy?
We show mercy to others by reflecting the mercy Christ showed us. Mercy is forgiveness, mercy is patience, mercy is love. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you” (NLT). In the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:21-35), Jesus describes a man who was shown mercy by his king, but in turn he did not pay forward the compassion he received to his own servant. Christ used this story to remind us to be merciful to others, as He was to us.
How Is Mercy Tied to Hope?
Mercy is a reason to hope. Because of God’s mercy, we are given the opportunity to spend eternity with our Heavenly Father. Instead of having to endure eternal damnation—which is what we deserve for our sins—Christ has created a way, through His mercy, for us to spend eternity with Him! He has given us this promise of abundant life after death. Because of Jesus and His mercy, we have hope for our future—we have hope for eternity. “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (Psalm 136:1).
